How I prepare for a show when I'm called last minute

Last-minute gig calls can be stressful for any drummer, but they’re also an opportunity to show what you’re made of. Over the years, I’ve developed a process that lets me step into almost any situation and deliver a solid performance, even when I only have a few hours to prepare.

1. GATHER EVERY BIT OF MATERIAL I CAN

The first thing I do is collect everything available—charts, recordings, videos, setlists, anything that helps me understand the songs. I’m looking for structure, dynamics, tempo changes, and any signature fills or parts that make the song what it is. The more material I have, the faster I can internalize what needs to happen.

2. PRACTICE STRATEGICALLY

I don’t just listen—I practice as if I’m already on stage. I memorize the structure, hit the fills, and use backing tracks when possible. I focus on the transitions between songs and any cues I need to watch for. This isn’t about perfection; it’s about building muscle memory and confidence.

3. MENTAL PREP IS JUST AS IMPORTANT

Before I even touch the kit, I visualize the performance. I think through the setlist, imagine the cues, and mentally prepare for things that might go wrong. This mental rehearsal reduces anxiety and helps me stay adaptable when things don’t go exactly as planned.

4. STAY CALM, FLEXIBLE, AND MUSICAL

When showtime comes, I focus on execution. I listen to the band, watch for cues, and stay in the moment. The goal isn’t to play perfectly—it’s to play musically, support the band, and connect with the audience. Sometimes the best performances come from these high-pressure situations because they force you to trust your instincts.

BOTTOM LINE

Last-minute calls are part of being a professional drummer. They test your skills, your preparation, and your ability to stay cool under pressure. But with the right approach, you can turn a chaotic situation into a confident performance. The key is having a process you can rely on, no matter how much time you have.
